Sadly, missed the magician's box on the way out so here's feedback. Saw it at The Fisher, Bungay. What attracted? I'm a regular Fisher attender, the play seemed from the publicity an interesting curiosity and I knew someone in the cast.  Performance? Excellent. Versatile acting, well but simply staged, tightly written. Shone a light on (for me) an unknown chapter in a humane way. Thank you.

  The Magician's Box (Ann Courtney)

Commissioned by Wilkin & Sons Ltd to celebrate its’ 125th Anniversary along with the 150th Anniversary of the R.A.B.I. (The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution), the Magician’s Box toured from late Summer through Autumn 2010.

In a high profile year for both organisations, including the Mechi garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, Mad Dogs toured with this brand new show to raise money and the profile of the R.A.B.I. An acclaimed production which resulted in the writer being invited to The House of Lords.

We saw the performance at New Buckenham.

We were attracted to the performance by:

The well -known quality of Ann's productions and original scripts.  Also through personal contact with Ann during the writing of the script.

Our thoughts on the performance at Old Buckenham:

1. A palpable hit!  A quite excellent production which told the story of Mechi in a captivating way and used Victorian vocabulary and sentence construction in a very sensitive and evocative manner.  Indeed, the spirit of the age, its triumphs and disasters came across most effectively.  Ann, another triumph, the script was a tour de force.  Well done!

2. The cast as a whole deserves much praise for making each of the parts they had to fill believable and distinct, one from another.  However, Noel Jones deserves to be singled out for his magnificent performance conveying the soaring ambition and the emotional ups and downs of Mechi most convincingly.  What a big part to learn!  Mark Finbow deserved a standing ovation as he left the stage after his wonderful portrayal of a mad Yankee farmer.  Most memorable. Sadly, the audience was too timid to give him his due.

3. Finally, the magician's box was worthy of Pandora.  What a versatile prop about which to centre the action!  Congratulations to whoever thought it up and made it, too.

From John and Gretel Wilson, both over 65.
