  Meet our Patrons

We are utterly delighted to announce that Dora Bryan, OBE, MA agreed to become our first patron. Described as a "national treasure" by a leading theatre critic, Dora has been performing in The Full Monty at the Prince of Wales Theatre, London and was most recently seen in the BBC's The Last of the Summer Wine.

She has had a sparkling career in drama, musicals and comedy, and is truly one of the nation's favourite actresses. Her plaudits have included a British Academy Award for her performance in the film A Taste of Honey; the Variety Club of Great Britain award for best actress of the year for the National Theatre's She Stoops to Conquer; and an Olivier Award for the Royal National Theatre's production of The Birthday Party.

A superb comedienne and veteran of stage and screen, Dora is cherished by all for her zesty and eccentric performances. We at Mad Dogs wish to extend our admiration for her excellent work and deepest thanks for her support, and hope that we can show our appreciation by welcoming her as one of our most illustrious Mad Dogs!

Our other top dog is Anton Rodgers. Anton is a truly multi-talented performer - a dancer, a singer and actor. From Lionel Bart's classic production of Oliver! in the 1960's to his more recent role as Colonel Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Anton has always delighted audiences with his wit, skill and genuine warmth. He has had extensive success on television as well in such memorable dramas as From May to December

As many of you now know, Anton Rodgers died at the beginning of December 2007.  He will be greatly missed.

I met Anton many years ago when he and Pat Coombes had the onerous task of being the examiners for London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art’s diploma exams.

Being a young and very green actress, the mere thought of performing for these two legends was enough to make me reconsider the wisdom of wanting to become an actor.  But, nervous as I was, I ploughed through the exam and came through with flying colours.

Sitting with them both in the theatre and discussing my performance and my future ambitions was one of the most encouraging experiences I think I have ever had.  They both had the most reassuring and comforting way about them.  You could tell immediately that they were genuinely nice people.  I have never had to revise that opinion.

Many, many years later when I asked Anton if he would become a patron for Mad Dogs & Englishmen he accepted straight away.

His energy has been a real inspiration.  A life full of the most exciting projects, singing, dancing, Shakespeare, Dickens, film and television.  When he became 70 he wrote to me about his birthday;

“I had the most wonderful birthday and I can strongly recommend being seventy if it is anywhere near as exciting as mine!”

We will miss him but we will still find his memory an inspiration.
