  Landscapes (Ann Courtney)

Landscapes was the first commissioned work undertaken by Mad Dogs & Englishmen in 1995 /1996.

Weald Country Park wanted a piece of theatre that reflected the history of the park and made theatrical sense of the documentation the park wardens had collected.

The history of the park spanned a huge period of time back from the Roman occupation of Britain through to the present day. We took some of the more memorable data and wrote several scenes that would take place around the park itself. The first scene found a group of ancient British tribes discussing their response to Roman invasion and was played around one of the very ancient oak trees in the park. Then we moved to the medieval period and the first sighting of Halley’s comet. Audience then moved across the park to the Tudor period and the house steward getting ready for a visit by Queen Elizabeth I. We then moved on to a memorable meeting with Capability Brown who was advising the new landscaping of the park. We took a brief look at the ornamental garden remains and ended up in the 2 nd World War. (Weald had a tank buried in the grounds). Audience roamed with the wardens and actors were conveyed at great speed by land rovers whilst changing costume on route. A great success.
