Mad Dogs and Englishmen have revived their acclaimed production of Victorian ghost stories for winter 1999
‘From the moment the cast appeared as ghostly apparitions swirling in smoke, the atmosphere was haunting. The four traditional tales, adapted by Ann Courtney, held the audience spellbound as they were transported from the windy wilds of Exmoor to a cosy Victorian parlour. In a sparse setting and with the bare minimum of props, the versatile actors managed to capture both the gaiety of a Parisian bar and the bleakness of an ancient church crypt.
Mad Dogs and Englishmen say they aim to engage the imaginations of their audience. They certainly did that. So much so, that I’m sure there were many people feeling distinctly uneasy on the cold drive home through dark country lanes.’
